A LARGE AUCTION CELEBRATES THE WORLD OF TWO WHEELS

The Piatti scooter with its original design, the rare Gilera ‘Otto Bulloni’ (Eight Bolts) and even an unusual Lambretta 150D of the French Postal Service: the history of two-wheeled vehicles will be the protagonists of the sale “360 wheels, mopeds, scooters & motorbikes” scheduled for Saturday 27 March at Aste Bolaffi in Turin and live on the Internet on the auction house’s website (astebolaffi.it).
The catalogue recounts the fascinating evolution of two-wheeled vehicles, from the dawn of the 20th century to the 1970s, through a collection of over 180 lots – hence the title of the auction – including motor bicycles, mopeds, scooters and motorbikes, most of small displacements, with a few exceptions. A wide and diversified selection capable of not only satisfying motorbike enthusiasts and collectors of vintage motorbikes but also admirers of vintage mopeds and motor bicycles, the means of light mobility for which collecting interest is growing.
“This is an auction for the general public; there is something for every taste and every budget. It is a unique opportunity to enrich one’s collection or just to acquire an object that is a symbol of our society’s customs and our history. Last but not least, it is an opportunity to take home pieces with a truly innovative and captivating design and transform them into pieces of furnishings,” said Filippo Bolaffi, CEO of Aste Bolaffi.
The section of scooters of particular interest, which boasts among the historical examples a Rumi Formichino (Ant) born in 1954 from the inspiration of artist and entrepreneur Donnino Rumi with the powerful engine of the famous “Turismo” that ensured excellent performance, perfect to be exhibited as a collector’s item but also to be used for some pleasant rides as it is in perfect working order (estimate XXX euros). Unmistakable design, rare and sought-after by collectors is the Piatti designed by Italian Vincenzo Piatti in 1952 and first produced in the Belgian D'Ieteren factory, then in the Cyclemaster factory in England (estimate 5,000-7,000 euros). A number of MV Agusta scooters complete the collection, a leading brand in two-wheeled sport that has collected no less than 37 world speed titles.

Among the wide selection of Lambrettas that stand out are a Lambretta 125DL “Macchia Nera” (Black Spot), so nicknamed because of the original sticker on the front shield, perfectly preserved and in working order, and an unusual French Postal Service Lambretta 150 D with its cart (estimate €1,000-2,000 euros each).

Among the group of motorbikes, mostly small displacement with a few exceptions, such as the Indian 750 from 1950 (estimate 15,000-18,000 euros), there are the top lots of the auction: a Gilera Otto Bulloni (Eight Bolts), a great classic of the glorious Arcore company (estimate 10,000-15,000 euros), a rare Aermacchi 250 twin-cylinder, a model created in 1952 by the famous designer Lino Tonti and produced in only 150 examples (estimate 3. 000-5,000 euros), a 1938 Moto Guzzi GTW Bitubo, the rarest of the selection of Moto Guzzi with which Aste Bolaffi pays homage to the historic brand in the year of its centenary, and a well-preserved 1924 Ner-a-Car, a wonderful opportunity to acquire an original and rare piece almost a hundred years old (estimate 15,000-18,000 euros).

There is also an original collection of motorised bicycles and micromotors, including a Mosquito 38 cc and subsequent evolutions of 48 cc displacement, a Bianchi bicycle with a Dardo motor, a French Velosolex and other curious German and Swiss motorised bicycles, such as HW MAW and Zanetti.
Finally, there are two motorbikes from the 1950s: a Capriolo 75 cc produced by Aero Caproni of Trento and a Mondial 175 Super Sprint from the well-known Milanese Company founded in 1929 by the Boselli brothers, which became famous for winning five world speed titles.
