Posters, photography, design and modern art will be up for auction on
6 November in
Turin, in a diverse catalogue that embraces various nuances of the
Twentieth-Century Arts. The sale opens with a selection of important
advertising posters from prestigious private collections, including three rare examples made for Rinascente, two signed by
Marcello Dudovich, and one by
Achille Luciano Mauzan who made the first known advertisement for the historic Milanese brand in 1917. The selection concludes with an important collection of 47 posters created in 1929 for
Mather&Company.
Photography follows with a selection of signature photographs, including three unpublished pieces by
Gustave Le Gray, dated 1867 and related to his trip to Nubia alongside the Pacha of Egypt, as well as some nude portraits by
Roberto Baccarini from the 1930s. Among the faces immortalized by great photographers is that of Frida Kahlo in a series of intense shots signed by
Leo Matiz, Picasso as seen by
Doisneau and
Sima, and also Jerry Hall and Annie Leibovitz portrayed by
Andy Warhol. There is also a selection from the great masters of Italian photography: Giacomelli, Fontana, Migliori and Basilico. Following this is a wonderful selection of shots of
Marilyn Monroe, including the top lot Crucifixion by
Bert Stern, taken from The Last Sitting, the last photographic session of the diva before her tragic death. The section ends with a Lambda print by
Massimo Listri and a selection of Giant Polaroids taken between 1996 and 2008 thanks to the initiative of Gillo Pontecorvo for the Venice International Film Festival, which depict grand stars of cinema and fashion.
The chapter dedicated to
Design presents, in addition to a selection of projects, drawings and objects signed by
Gio Ponti, numerous lots signed by Carlo Scarpa, Franco Albini, the BBPR group, Sandro Cherchi, Ico Parisi and the creations for Stilnovo, Venini and Vistosi. Among the 190 lots an important pair of Lamps by
Gino Sarfatti, the famous Arco lamp by
Castiglioni and important glasses and decorative objects stand out. The section concludes with a prestigious collection from Turin, among which some very interesting lots are those of important objects designed in the context of
Memphis and
Meta Memphis, in particular a rare tapestry designed by
Ettore Sottsass, of which only 3 copies were produced.
The catalogue closes with the section dedicated to
Modern Art in which drawings, graphic designs and paintings can be found. It begins with futurism, with an important Fillia oil painting from 1931, then moves on to
Severini,
De Pisis,
Marini,
Xavier Bueno,
Cascella and many more. The XX century is represented by increasingly important names on the international market: Ensor and Grosz but also
Joan Miró, whose important unpublished artwork will be up for auction. Towards the end of the XX century there are works by
Mario Schifano, an Axiom by
Vincenzo Agnetti from 1969 and a nice décollage by
Mimmo Rotella.
