RARE ALBERTO SAVINIO PAINTING AT AUCTION ON 8 NOVEMBER IN TURIN: ESTIMATED AT 350,000-450,000 EUROS
On public display from 3 November in the Sala Bolaffi
Turin, 27 October 2022 – A unique opportunity to admire close up a rare painting by Alberto Savinio is offered to collectors, scholars and enthusiasts by Aste Bolaffi. ‘Awaiting Aeneas’, the top lot of the next auction of modern and contemporary art, scheduled for Tuesday 8 November at Sala Bolaffi in Turin (Via Cavour 17), will in fact be on display at the same venue during Turin Art Week, starting on Thursday 3 November. Estimated at 350,000-450,000 euros, the painting, which has been in the same private collection since the 1980s (Lot 59), presents all the elements dear to Savinio, whose production, unlike that of his brother Giorgio De Chirico, is very limited.
"The work of art was painted in Paris during the prolific years of Savinio's adherence to the Surrealist movement, although looking at it immediately reveals the artist's completely rare and individual style, halfway between Surrealism and Metaphysics but with an extraordinary uniqueness. Savinio freely distorts myth, history and personal memories beyond groups of influence and affiliation," commented Caterina Fossati, specialist in the Modern and Contemporary Art department at Aste Bolaffi.
But the Savinio is not the only masterpiece in the auction. The catalogue consists of over 190 lots ranging from the early 20th century to the present day. After an initial chapter devoted to graphics, with works by Michelangelo Pistoletto among others (Lots 1-47), the second section of the auction sees leading players with great paintings and sculptures (Lots 48-192): a transversal journey across the history of art through rare and precious works.
These include works by Antonio Ligabue (‘Il pascolo’, Lot 77, estimated at 160,000-200,000 euros), Giorgio De Chirico (‘La partenza del cavaliere’, Lot 104, estimated at 35,000-50,000 euros), Mario Sironi (‘Composizione con cavallo bianco’, Lot 94, estimated at 10,000-15,000 euros), Renato Guttuso (‘Contadino con sacco di patate’, Lot 113, estimated at 35,000-45,000 euros), Francesco Clemente (Untitled, Lot 178, estimated at 90,000-120,000 euros) and Piero Manzoni, present with a work that was exhibited at the famous first exhibition at the Giamaica bar in Milan (Untitled, Lot 129, estimated at 90,000-140,000 euros).
More recent works include Gerhard Richter's 2000 oil on photograph (Florence, Lot 160, estimated at 35,000-40,000 euros), a lot of eight original plates from Mimmo Paladino's 2003 "Pinocchio" (Lot 169, estimated at 5,000-8,000 euros) and shots by Nan Goldin, leading photographer of Laura Poitras' documentary, winner of the Golden Lion at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.
