A historic byline for the newspaper "La Stampa", Bruno Bernardi chronicled Italian football for decades, following the stories of Juventus and the national team with passion and expertise. A brilliant writer and direct witness to generations of champions, he narrated matches, anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories, and unforgettable moments from the world of Italian football.
Author of around fifteen books—his most famous probably being "Rombo di tuono", the biography of Gigi Riva, with whom he shared a deep bond of esteem and friendship.
His life was a long race across football fields and press boxes all over the world, celebrating triumphs and facing disappointments, always with a cleareyed and passionate gaze. He was a direct witness to the drama of the 1994 World Cup, during which he suffered a mild heart attack—but was fortunate enough to be just steps away from a five-star hospital in Los Angeles.
Today, we would call him an old-school master: essential in style, profound in knowledge, and gifted with an innate nose for news. But above all, driven by a relentless pursuit of human connection with the game’s protagonists. From Charles and Sivori to Boniperti, Riva, Bettega, Zoff, Scirea, Trapattoni, Platini, Boniek, and his own personal pride: Diego Armando Maradona. He was, in fact, the only Italian journalist invited to the El Pibe de Oro wedding.
Some of his collection's jerseys will be auctioned at the Sport Memorabilia auction, scheduled for Thursday, May 29th at 3:30 PM in Sala Bolaffi in Turin (via Cavour 17). These include the Argentine National team jersey worn by Maradona at Italia '90 and personally gifted by him to Bernardi (lot 100, estimated at 15-20,000 euros). Other Bernardi relics are the jersey worn by Platini during one of his national team call-ups in 1981/82 (lot 94, estimated at 5,000-7,500 euros) and Gigi Riva's National team jersey from 1972 (lot 97, estimated at 2,500-3,500 euros).
