THE TRADING CARD OF RIVERA'S FIRST SEASON IN SERIE A

Some champions are meant to do great things: they forge ahead, make the fans dream and remain in their hearts for a long time. This is true for Gianni Rivera who made his debut in Serie A when he was not yet sixteen years old and had remained in the higher division for 20 years, winning 3 championships with Milan, a European championship with the National team and the 1969 Ballon d'Or.
Figures are those of the great champion, but fans’ attachment goes further. Even today, enthusiasts and collectors are seeking out for Rivera trading cards. One of these, a very rare 1959 rookie, will be auctioned by Aste Bolaffi on 20 June. This is the absolute first appearance in a sticker of the midfielder who, at the time very young, wore the gray shirt of Alessandria, a club in his city where he get through all the steps of the youth academy.
Close to the end of the previous season, on 2 June 1959, Rivera made his debut when he was not yet sixteen in the home draw against Inter. In 1959 he officially entered the Alessandria first team squad and was optioned by Milan where he would have moved the following season. It was therefore the season of the great leap among the professionals for that little boy who would later have given great emotions to the National team too, thanks to the victory of the 1968 European Championship in Italy and the final match of the Mexico 1970 World Cup.
